The Hydrographics process.

  • Preparation

The first step is preparation. Prep work is required on every product we work on & can vary from a fairly simple process to an extensive one, depending on the type, age & condition of the item we’re working on. It always includes sanding, scuffing, cleaning & priming with correct primer for the substrate. Our primers take a minimum of 24 hours to dry. You won’t find any inferior quick-drying primers here.

  • Basecoat Application

Two coats of a Basecoat paint is then applied. The basecoat colour does affect the look of the selected pattern, so every project will have a paint colour selected at the same time that a pattern is chosen, to ensure the finished product is perfect. The base colour can either be selected to contrast, match or complement the hydrographic film &/or rest of the project.

  • Transfer of the Film

This is the fun step… Transfer of the film onto the product. Your chosen hydrographic film is placed on the water of our 2500mm wide hydro dipping tank to hydrate. We then spray an activating agent which turns the film from a solid into a liquid allowing us to complete the dipping process. Once the dip has been completed the item is rinsed down with fresh water removing any leftover residue & it is then left to dry. The hydrographic film must adhere to the part being dipped, and this is only possible with compatible materials. This adhesion occurs via a chemical bond between the ink that is activated in the film and the paint. Check out some of our videos to watch the process!

  • 2K Clearcoat Application

2K Clearcoat Application. A clearcoat is just as necessary on a hydro graphics project as it is on a paint project. Why? Because a project with hydro graphics IS a permanent paint project. Most 2K clearcoats work well to provide a durable and protective glossy, matte, or satin finish.

  • Final Check & Polish

Final Check & Polish to ensure the quality of the finished product. As easy as we’ve made it sound, Hydographics is never a straight forward process. There can be so many variables, however our experience over the years of testing & research with different materials ensures we always make sure you get a quality finish. At Hydrographics WA, we are proud of the work we do & your satisfaction is the foundation of our success. We have numerous patterns to choose from such as carbon fibre, wood grain and so many more unique patterns!Description goes here
